Choose a CSA: Full Circle Farms

We did a little research from the Puget Sound Fresh website and farm guide, and there are over 70 CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) in our region and 18 in King County. WOW! We knew there were a lot, but we didn’t know there were that many. We are so lucky here to have a wide variety of farms and CSAs to choose from. Today, our CSA  of the day is Full Circle Farm. You’ve probably seen Full Circle Farm at any number of our local Farmers Markets.

Choose a CSA: JHarvest

Today we have a very unique CSA – Jharvest. We contacted Jharvest and asked them to tell us about their unique program. Here they are in their own words.

Jharvest is an innovative venture in Jewish Community Supported Agriculture run by JConnect Seattle and Hillel UW, in partnership with Oxbow Farm and Hazon. Jharvest members purchase a CSA share from Oxbow Farm for the growing season (June through October) and pick up a weekly box of produce at Hillel UW. Jharvest members get organic, locally-grown vegetables delivered in time for Shabbat, all summer long. You’ll spend less, on [...]

Choose a CSA: Boistfort Valley Farm

Community Supported Agriculture shares, or CSAs are a great way to support a local farm and get high quality produce delivered to your home or a centralized pickup location. We have more than a dozen CSAs in the Seattle area and even more throughout the rest of the state. But which CSA do you pick?  Well, we’re here to help. We’re interviewing as many local CSAs as we can and asking them a set of questions to help you decide which CSA is right for you. Today’s CSA is Boistfort Valley Farm. You’ve probably seen them at the Ballard [...]

Choose a CSA: Growing Washington

Strawberries at Alm Hill

Even though we saw snow today and I seriously considered pulling out the wool hat and gloves (along with the hot chocolate, hot toddies and the electric blanket), it is really time to start thinking about joining a CSA. CSAs (or community supported agriculture) are a great way to support local farmers while purchasing local and organic produce to feed your family. When you join a CSA, you (usually) prepay for a certain number of weeks worth of produce. Then you pick up a box or a bag of fruits and/or veggies every week. The farmers get guaranteed income and you get a box of produce for a (usually) slightly reduced rate.

We’re lucky in the Seattle area to have an amazing number of CSAs to choose from. Over the next few weeks, we’ll interview as many local CSAs as we can and ask each of them a series of questions to help you determine which CSA is right for you.

This week we’ll start off with Growing Washington’s Local Choice Food Box.

Give a CSA a shot for a few weeks

If you’ve been thinking about joining a CSA, but haven’t wanted to sign up for the long term commitment that many of them require, I’ve got a deal for you. The great folks at Growing Washington are offering two short session CSAs this fall and winter.

Their fall CSA runs from October 31st through November 22nd. The winter CSA runs from November 28th through December 20th.

That’s just 4 weeks for each CSA. What better time to check out a CSA and see if it works for you and your family. Both CSAs are $96 for a [...]

Spicy Yellow Beans with Mangalitsa Sausage

For the past few weeks, we’ve been receiving absolutely delightful beans in our Growing Washington CSA box. I love fresh beans, in all colors (purple, green, and yellow recently). Usually I’ll just steam them and serve them with a little butter, but John wanted something with a bit more kick the other night and so he found this delightful recipe from The Inquisitive Palate. We were  actually able to make this recipe completely local except for the ginger root and the salt and pepper, though we had to adapt it slightly. Cooking out of the box: Week 4

If you’re a CSA member in Puget Sound, you’ve probably been loving all of the fresh and local produce you can find in your CSA boxes these days. But now that most CSAs have been up and running for a while, are you finding that it is hard to use all of those veggies? I admit, some weeks we struggle too. After all, most boxes contain at least 4-6 pounds of produce. That’s a lot of carrots!

Here are the items we got in our CSA box this week and how we’re going to use them.

Shaved Carrot Salad with Blueberries and Dill

When Michelle Obama was creating such a buzz over the White House organic vegetable garden, one of the quotes that was mentioned often was this:

“And when you’re dealing with kids, for example, you want to get them to try that carrot. Well, if it tastes like a real carrot and it’s really sweet, they’re going to think that it’s a piece of candy. So my kids are more inclined to try different vegetables if they’re fresh and local and delicious.”

This is a stunning salad

Well, I couldn’t agree more. Sweet fresh carrots can taste just [...]

Shaved Beet Salad with Mint and Feta

I admit, I was one of those people who used to hate beets. I always thought they tasted like dirt. Of course, most of my experiences with beets came from childhood when my mother would serve pickled beets out of a can. Last year we started pan roasting beets with some bacon grease and seasoned salt and I realized they weren’t as bad as I remembered (though honestly, I still thought they had a very faint dirt taste). So this year one of our goals was to figure out how to incorporate more beets into our diet. They [...]

Cooking out of the box: Week 3

If you’re a CSA member in the Puget Sound, you’ve probably either started receiving your CSA boxes.  Here’s what’s in our box this week and what we’re planning on doing with everything. We’ll try to post this list with recipes and menu ideas each week.

My CSA box this week

As a disclaimer, we’re members of the Growing Washington Local Choice Food Box and we’ve partnered with them this year to provide recipes to their CSA members. For this series, we’ll list out what’s in our box, but we’ll [...]
