Meet a USDA certified butcher

On Saturday and Sunday, June 26th and 27th, Olsen Farms is bringing the folks from Smokey Ridge Meats, their USDA certified butcher, to the farmers markets. You’ll be able to meet with them at the University District Farmers Market, the Ballard Farmers Market, and the Broadway Farmers Market this weekend.

Raising and selling high quality meat isn’t ONLY about what you feed the animals. It’s also very much about how the animal is treated from pasture to package. If you’d like information on how your meat was butchered or USDA regulations and processing information, now’s your chance.

Tilth Edible Plant Sale in Issaquah - May 22nd!

For those eastsiders who are looking to expand out their garden, you may want to head down to the Issaquah Farmer’s Market this weekend for the Tilth Edible Plant Sale.

We built most of our garden from the two Tilth Plant sales here in Seattle (with the rest coming from EatYourYard.com‘s CSA program) and we love what they are doing. The Mr. volunteered to help set up the plant sale, we love it so much.

You can head over to Tilth’s site to get more information on the sale, or just head down to the Issaquah Farmer’s Market [...]

Saturday’s University District Farmer’s Market Preview

This is a big weekend folks.

This weekend kicks off Seattle’s Street Fair season with the 41st annual University District Street Fair. On the plus side, this means tons of arts and crafts and street fair food up and down the Ave. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend checking it out. The weather should be awesome this year, so expect great crowds. Sunday is generally a bit less crowded than Saturday, if that matters. For more information on the U-District Street Fair, check here.

The down side is two-fold. First, a number of streets in and around [...]

The Farmers Market Report

Not our standard Farmers Market Report where we tell you whats out at the market today, but a quick review of the King County Farmers Market Report.

Before I go into it, might I suggest downloading a copy and reading it for yourself? Only 15 pages and a thrilling read[1]. You can get it at the King County website, along with all the supporting documentation.

King County surveyed 29 markets in the county, 21 King County farmers, 22 more farmers from outside the county, as well as discussions with a group of farmers and market managers, assistants and board members to collect information for this report. A couple key points really caught my eye.

For instance, in 1999, King County had 9 farmer’s markets making $3.5M. 2009, 10 years later? 39 markets making somewhere between $20 and $30M a year.

85% of King County residents buy more than one in-county grown food item each each year, 89% of those residents purchasing at the Farmer’s Markets.

Farmer’s have grown as well. 1993 saw 15 and 7 farmers selling product at the U-District and Freemont markets respectively, 2009 saw 250 different farmers selling in the county, 100 from King County alone. Continue reading The Farmers Market Report

Georgetown is getting a farmers market!

Well, Georgetown residents appear to be in luck. From June through September, there will be a farmers market and flea market in the old Rainier Cold Storage parking lot.

Slog has full details.

The market will be Saturdays, but no word yet whether it will be Saturday morning or afternoon (though I’d guess morning).

We’re so lucky to have a wide variety of farmers markets in our region. Way to go Georgetown!

Westminster, MA Farmers Market

Cook Local is on vacation this week and we’re visiting John’s home state of Massachusettes. We’re not abandoning our locavore ways though. Today we visited the Westminster Farmers Market on our way to John’s parents’ house and were delighted with the selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and baked goods we found. The Westminster Farmers Market is open through mid-November and though it was pouring down rain when we arrived, there were at least twelve different vendors set up when the market opened. A couple more were completing setup by the time we were done shopping and [...]

Shopping for vegetables at the supermarket is boring

Have you read the story about the European Union banning “ugly” produce? The EU recently lifted the ban on imperfect produce for many items, but apples, citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, lettuces, peaches and nectarines, pears, strawberries, sweet peppers, table grapes and tomatoes still must meet acceptable “prettiness” quotients.

This is one reason I love shopping at the farmers markets. Where else are you going to find a heart shaped tomato or a multi-colored pepper? Both of these beauties were purchased at the University District Farmers Market this past weekend (the pepper from Billy’s and the tomato from Alm [...]

Ballard Farmers Market Report

It is a busy day at the Ballard Farmers Market. Lots of corn and peaches can be had today.

Ayala Farms has the last of the hybrid cherries for the season. These cherries are pure sugar with a pale and firm flesh.

Mt. Townsend has their usual complement of cheeses. If you’ve seen these cheeses at Whole Foods, you know that they are a lot cheaper at the farmers markets. Pick up some Seastack for $10.

Nash’s has beautiful multiple color carrots.

Growing Things has huge squash blossoms ready for stuffing. If you are trying to grow squash [...]

The weather is a little cooler today than yesterday and the market is buzzing. Here are a few of today’s finds.

Billy’s has beautiful yellow tomatoes in addition to their red tomatoes and peppers. Don’t forget to pick up a big bag of seconds if you want to make sauce. They are cheap at $2 per pound.

Olsen Farms is back with a good supply of red, yellow, and purple potatoes. Of course they still hav a full compliment of grass fed meat.

Sea Breeze Farm has 30% off their wine today. Pick up some [...]
