If you’re a CSA member in the Puget Sound, you’ve probably either started receiving your boxes or will be receiving them soon. Here’s what’s in our box this week and what we’re planning on doing with everything. We’ll try to post this list with recipes and menu ideas each week.

Summer radishes
As a disclaimer, we’re members of the Growing Washington Local Choice Food Box and we’ve partnered with them this year to provide recipes to their CSA members. For this series, we’ll list out what’s in our box, but we’ll also try to list items that aren’t in our box but might be in yours.
Week 1 – June 15th
- Strawberries
- Spring Onions
- Radishes
- Salad mix
- Spinach
- Chard
- Beets
- Sugar Snap Peas
I love the beginning of summer in Seattle. We have so much wonderful local produce. It is salad season, so our first plan of the week is to use those spring onions to make some salad dressing. Then we’ll use the spinach and salad mix for lunches during the week. Since we bought some Wilson Fish salmon last week, and cooked up a huge piece with John’s brined salmon recipe, we’ll have leftovers to mix in with the salad for lunches.
The sugar snap peas will be great in our sauteed peas recipe. We don’t have any pea shoots this week, but that’s ok. We’ll live without them.
For the beets and radishes, try this simple dish. Grate a handful of radishes and one or two beets into a bowl. Mix with some olive oil, champagne vinegar, salt and pepper, and a little bit of honey and dijon mustard. Serve as a side dish. I don’t love beets, but when you grate them raw and mix in the sweet dressing, they are fantastic. Plus, the dressing really cuts the bitterness of the raw radishes.
For the chard, we’ll make up some sauteed swiss chard and salmon.
Check back on Wednesday for some strawberry-rhubarb muffins, or just eat the strawberries right out of the box. After all, we have some of the best strawberries in the country right in our back yard. Savor them and enjoy them.

This is week 5 of my second CSA (signed up for my first one that is 8 weeks only to find this one which is 23 weeks and much more convenient to pick up). It was mostly greens and onions to start with eggs, preserves, herbs and herbed goat cheese giving variety at first. This week is sugar snap peas, snow peas, summer squash, zucchini, green leaf lettuce, mixed salad greens, cucumbers, basil, and broccoli. We just picked up our final week of our first CSA and it is snap peas, summer squash, red leaf lettuce, onions and potatoes.
