Local food news

Cook Local is taking a couple of days of much needed vacation this week, so posting will be a bit light. But a couple of pieces of sad local food news cropped up yesterday that we wanted to tell you about. We’ll return to our cooking out of the box series next week.

Ballard Farmers Market and Secret Stash Salt

I’ve loved seeing Secret Stash Salt at the Ballard Farmers Market every Sunday. Janna always has a smile and their salts cannot be beat. We love them on just about everything – in our Beer Battered Fish and Chips, on our Cool as a Cucumber Appetizers, and just over simple foods like eggs and grilled halibut. But unfortunately they’ve been told by the market managers that last week was their last week at the market as more space was needed for farmers. We’re very saddened by this, and hope that the Ballard Farmers Market managers might reconsider or be able to find some additional space for Secret Stash Salt. Of course we realize that at a Farmers Market, the farmers should take priority, but we are very hopeful that some sort of accomodation can be made for Secret Stash Salts. In the meantime, you can find them every Thursday at the Queen Anne Farmers’ Market. Since they won’t be in Ballard any more, they could really use your business on Thursdays in Queen Anne. Let’s show them some support!

GreenGo Food

Thanks to generous readers and a very generous glazier in Seattle (the Glass Doctor of King and Pierce County), GreenGo Food has a brand new window. Unfortunately, even though business has continued to grow, they just aren’t making enough money to sustain operations for much longer. They are still in business now, so please continue to show them some support. They are looking for someone to buy their turn-key kitchen and they hope to be able to find a bit of land and be able to just farm and work the land like they know it needs. Dylan and Heidi and Cypress are truly amazing people and I feel honored to know them and lucky to have been able to patronize GreenGo Food. Let’s make their last three months some of the best they’ve ever had. If you’re looking for high quality, sustainable food prepared by people who understand the hard work that went into growing the food and treat it with love, please patronize GreenGo whenever you can.

  • Thank you for your informative post and support, Patricia. It’s always a pleasure to catch-up with you and John at the market.

GreenGo Food will be a big loss for the Ballard neighborhood, yet I wish them the best in finding a piece of land to farm.

  • Thank you for all of your support. We are talking with a couple of interested parties, hopefully GreenGo may continue under better funded ownership. We expect to remain at the wheel through September. We’ve definitely learned A LOT and would be happy to share everything with a new owner to make a successful transition. In the meantime, we continue to make GreenGo the best we possibly can. Quality local food is the one thing we will not compromise.
