Cook Local is on vacation this week and we’re visiting John’s home state of Massachusetts. We’re not abandoning our locavore ways though. Today we visited the Westminster Farmers Market on our way to John’s parents’ house and were delighted with the selection of fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, cheeses, and baked goods we found.
The Westminster Farmers Market is open through mid-November and though it was pouring down rain when we arrived, there were at least twelve different vendors set up when the market opened. A couple more were completing setup by the time we were done shopping and headed out.
Here are the things we found:
- Golden and red raspberries
- Apples
- Grass fed beef and pastured pork
- Goat cheese
- Cow’s milk cheese and cheese spreads
- Squash
- Carrots
- Peppers
- Tomatoes
- Tomatillos
- Potatoes
- Eggs
- Nut butters and spice mixes
- Breads
- Flowers and crafts
Prices were very reasonable. Then again, it is a smaller town in central Mass, so I would expect prices to be a bit cheaper than Seattle. 5 oz of goat cheese was $4, hot Italian sausage from pastured pigs was $4.50/lb, and grass fed ground beef was $4.75/lb.
As we were obviously not regulars to this market, I was very impressed by how many “Eat Local” and “Support Local Farms” signs we found. With every purchase, we were encouraged to support local farms.
We will definitely be visiting this market again the next time we return to central MA.

Sounds lovely! New England Farmers Markets certainly do have a wonderful bounty!

Thanks for the great review. We have all put a lot of work into this market, since we started it last year. It is nice to be recognized. I hope when you return the weather is better for you. On behalf of all our vendors, volunteers, and The Westminster AgCom. Thanks again.

Wow! I’m glad you found our post. We really appreciated your market and we were able to make an amazing Minestrone soup for my in-laws with market stash. It is our hope that one day anywhere we go will have a farmers market.
If there is anything we can do to help your market, please let us know.
