Fava Bean Sauté

Yes, I know. Let’s get it out of the way now, shall we?

Hannibal Lecter: A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.

Ok, all the laughs done? Can we continue?

Fresh fava beans are a pain to work with, or can be.

If they are anything but pea sized you need to not only get them out of their pods, but also out of their skins. It can be labor intensive. It can be a pain. It can be time intensive, since you really want to wait for them to cool, unless you happen to have android hands that can handle the heat. Which, if you do, awesome. If you want to make some pickles...

Cucumbers are a bit tricky when you want to do a recipe for them. After all, we mostly eat them raw. I’ve been known to slice off the ends and eat a cucumber like a carrot. We regularly just slice them up and sprinkle them with a little Secret Stash Salt.

We do, however,  have a recipe or two. But first, a digression.

Tasty, tasty pickles

Tasty, tasty pickles

One of those bands I like is called The Gourds. One of their songs, very apropos to this recipe, is about pickling.

It’s not really relevant, but it’s a damn good song, and The Gourds are just fun. Head over to here, set’er up to track 15 and lets talk about pickles. Continue reading If you want to make some pickles…

Single serving sandwich bread. Really. No, seriously.

Mr. Cooklocal here, and let me apologize right off the bat. There isn’t going to be a recipe here. This isn’t about the what, so much as the how.

This is the greatest thing since sliced bread!!! No, wait, it *is* sliced bread. Sorry.

One of the many, many cookbooks on our shelf is the Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day, which is actually a review copy, so, there we go, ethic folks, getting that out of the way right off the bat.

While the title isn’t exactly correct, since it really takes a bit more [...]

Mussels Pigalle

Now that we’ve had two successes with clams, I’m ready to branch out into mussels. This might not seem all that adventurous after clams, but here’s a little background. Until last year, I’d never met a mussel that I liked. Other than sea urchin, I like all seafood. Lobster, clams, crab, oysters, halibut, rockfish, salmon… you name it, I’ll eat it. But mussels just never appealed to me. John would order them and I’d try one, but I never liked it. They tasted fishy to me, and the texture was just not something I enjoyed.

Roasted Asparagus with Hazelnuts and Parmesan

Finally, asparagus season is back in the Pacific Northwest. Though it seemed like it snuck up on us this year. Last week the markets were still offering all winter vegetables such as kale and parsnips, and all of a sudden, this past Sunday at the Ballard Farmers Market, it was asparagus and morels all over the place! Well, in truth, it was asparagus, morels, peanuts, and dried beans all around.

Hazelnut Crusted Asparagus

We love asparagus. Our favorite recipe is the simplest. Just snap off the woody ends of the asparagus, toss with olive oil and [...]

That’s amazing!

This post goes out to the homies of mine who are ‘too impatient’ to cook.  You know who you are.  This recipe is the easiest thing in the world and needs only a Pyrex oven dish.  No measuring, no spoons, nothing.

I don’t remember how I found this recipe.

I don’t remember why I picked this recipe out of all the others on the page.

That said, I’ve made this recipe for many, many people.  Not one person has had a bad thing to say about it, unless you count ‘My god, how many calories are *in this???*’
